Week 7: Carnaval!

This weekend my roommate and I traveled to Cadiz in Southern Spain for the traditional Spanish carnaval. It was a very long day, as we left Madrid early Saturday morning and arrived back home around noon on Sunday. This meant we had to sleep on the bus, but that is something I am finally getting good at! I have my blanket and eye mask, which look ridiculous but really do help you get comfortable and sleep!

My roommate Yvonne and I dressed up in costumes; her as an elephant and me as a circus ring master. This evolved into us telling people she was Dumbo which helped them understand the costume better. We saw so many wild and fun costumes; my favorite were large group ones like snow white and the seven dwarfs. My all time favorite though was “Corona Virus” which someone had interpreted as a large germ wearing a crown, because corona means crown in Spanish. We spent the day, eating some delicious fried fish, drinking Sangria and walking through the streets listening to different musical performances.

However, my highlight was actually the city, Cadiz, itself which was a really cool little beach town on a peninsula. There was a nice old cobblestone boardwalk to a castle that was a great spot to watch the sunset. After dark, the city was lit up and become very loud with all the people celebrating and filing the streets. We went to the opening concert in the main plaza where a famous flamenco singer from Cadiz performed.

We then passed through some local bars where I discovered Radler thanks to my roommates recommendation. Radler is a delicious beer with lemon, which I was glad to find because I have never liked beer until then! We finally were able to head back to Madrid at 3 am and arrived back home at 11 am on Sunday. Needless to say, with such a big day we spent all of Sunday sleeping, but that sleep was the best of my trip so far!
