Week 8: Salamanca y Avila

This weekend I joined my friend Alice to visit Salamanca and Avila, which were some of the most impressive cities I have seen so far. Avila has an incredible city wall which we were able to walk the entirety of, which was so cool! Besides being able to walk on the wall, another highlight was the huge empanada that we shared, which has become my go to food in Spain. Then we headed to the famous university town of Salamanca, which is home to one of the oldest universities in the world! The city was so beautiful with incredible details in the facades, the two cathedrals and along the cobblestone streets!

Salamanca is known as the golden city, because of the distinct golden color the stone used here has. There were also many interesting traditions in visiting the city; such as finding the frog on the famous university facade (which I eventually did) and the astronaut carved into the cathedral entrance that was added upon the repair of the original stonework in 1992. I really appreciated these small details that made the city even more picturesque!

I am also realizing how soon I have to leave Madrid and it makes me quite sad. I try not to think about it, but that’s hard when I am thinking about and buying tickets and hotels for my travel plans after Spain. My travel plans have also been complicated as coronavirus spreads and health advisories become more and more common. Because of level three travel advisories I have decided to cancel my stay in Rome and am currently attempting to find alternatives. I am excited for everything that is coming in the next few weeks, but realizing that I will have to leave everything I love about Madrid behind very soon!
